Funding for children with disabilities has always been a controversial issue within the United States. In the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act it states that every child is entitled to an “appropriate” education. To me appropriate means what is best for the individual child with the disability. The school district should fund every disabled child’s education plan to a certain point, but I think there should always be boundaries. I think every plan should have certain boundaries so the system won’t be abused and other children’s education won’t be put at risk.
Every parent wants what is best for his or her child and if everyone sent their child to a $135,000 a year school it just wouldn’t be realistic. Therefore I think our school districts, municipalities and the Federal Government should consider providing local programs that fit into the districts budget. If we had more local programs that were affordable in the state’s budget there wouldn’t be as many problems and lawsuits; disabled children would be getting the resources they need. Parents and school districts spend so much time in court debating over funds that they wind up spending more then what the child’s education is actually costs. In the article it stated that the school district spent $191,000 in legal fees, and I find that absolutely absurd, there are so many more places that money could’ve gone.
I do not agree with public schools funding 100% of a disabled child’s education at a boarding school. It is not the school’s responsibility to fund a child’s life at home, functional or not. If the parent’s feel it is in the best interest of their child to have 24/7 care then I think they should help the school district with the payments. The school district should be responsible for when the child is in school and the parents should be responsible for when the child is at home.
