Sarah Heins Hamlet Essay Honors 160 Hamlet Hamlet Impressions Essay The first feature about Hamlet that really caught my attention was his thoughts of suicide. So early in the play Shakespeare let the readers and audiences know that Hamlet was suicidal. This changes how I looked at Hamlet right away. I knew he was grievinghis father’s death, but already thinking about suicide seemed extreme. His first soliloquy was very informative helped to learn a lot about Hamlet. Also Hamlet being suicidal from the start changed a few things throughout the play. If Hamlet was not thinking of suicide maybe he would not have gone to see the ghost figure, or have been greatly scared of it. Hamlet is so discontent with his current situation I was afraid of his reaction to the news of his father’s murder at first. His actions towards anything will be a lot different than if he was not suicidal. I think his thoughts of suicide will be something to watch and keep in mind throughout the play. There are many impressions, and questions to be discussed about Hamlet’s character even in the very beginning of the play, but I think I have touched on a few of the most important and common. His thoughts of suicide change his actions and reactions throughout the play, and also give the readers a more in depth look at Hamlet. His madness will forever be studied and interpretedas having many different meanings, and again his relationships with other characters will reveal a lot more about his character than just looking at his own thoughts and actions. Hamlet is so complex and intense it will be hard to ever fully understand him and his actions. This may be what makes him the greatest dramatic character ever created.
