Assistive technology is a term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. States like Ohio, Georgia, and Florida provide an electronic database and institution or campus to provide these services. Each of these states provides a list of types of devices, a specific device and have different ways that individuals can receive them. According to Accessibleociety.org, the American with Disability Act (ADA) is the most comprehensive federal civil-rights statue protecting the rights of people with disabilities. It affects access to employment; state and local governments programs and services; access to places of accommodation such as businesses, transportation, and non-profit service providers and telecommunications. With this being said those with disabilities need the assistance to fulfill these goals. That is when human services play a role to help individuals with disabilities reach these goals because the individuals have the right to do so.
Ohio offers a wide range of assistive technologies from adaptive toys for language, speech, visual and hearing, adaptive vehicles known as wheelchairs, scooters, cars and lifts, special keyboards that is controlled by a mouse, voice or breath as well as accessible living in a group home or personal home with supervision, ramps or is wheelchair accessible. Some healthcare educational resources for the special need population are available through various organizations such as local healthcare communities, community centers and some specialty schools for autism, deaf and blind.
