Note: This is a narrative and does not really occur in the book

It were perty dark dat nite, en foggy too. Lil' Huck went along in his canoe, but tied a rope to da raff so he wouln''t get lost. I could hardly see mah hand in front of mah face it was s'darn foggy. Den a lil while later da rope Huck tied to da raff done broke free; he were nowhere in sight. Aftuh a long while, Huck hain't come back. I got worried fo' da boy. En den I heard a “Whoop!” come from where Huck went off to.
“Whoop! Whoop!” I shouted. I figya'd he'd hear me en den come back.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
He's a commin' back. I know dat he he is! I figya'd I'd haff t'stay in da same spot for him to find me. I row'd da raff over to da island. I weren't worried for my own self or da raff. I went so fast I broke one of da oars clear in half.
“Whoop! Whoop!” I traveled up and down dat island shoutin' for da boy. I tried not to wonder too far or I might end up like Huck.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
I ain't heard no “whoop” back in quite a long time. Maybe da boy is hurt. He ain't got no protecshin. He ain't got no one to care fuh him.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
I ain't heard a peep out da boy. He musn't be on dis island. I'll check anotha'. I went back to da raff en tried to row to another. The darn oar is broken and ain't no use to me. I got out into da water en swam the raff ova to da next island. I swallad s'much water getting' over dere I thought I might'a drownded.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
I shouted all over dis island. I ain't hearin' nothin from da boy. He wouldn't ignore me would'e? Dat can't be it. Maybe he was on the other island. Maybe I's da one who left him. Boy I feel terrible.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
Can da boy even swim? He wouldn't'a gone off by himself if he couldn't. Would'e? Oh no, what if da boy done drowned? Dis is all mah fault. I shoulda kept a betta eye on da boy.
“Whoop! Whoop!”
Maybe dat first “whoop” weren't even Huck. Does he even know I's shoutin' fo him? Oh...
