Ideology is the foundation of democracy. Democracy, in turn, rests on the foundation that the people make the decisions, that the people control their own fate. However it is known that democracy has its flaws, which lies in the fact that the majority gets what it wants. The majority, seeing a weakness, often exploits the minority and surpresses them. When problems arise the dominant figures will often blame the minority creating social unrest. The novel “The Last Town on Earth” shows many excellent examples of ideology and the issue that arise from it. In this essay the aspects of class ideology will be examined in detail.
First we must define what class ideology is. According to dictionary.com it is the body of doctrine, myth, belief, etc., that guides an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group. From this we can assume that ideology is essential what the majority of the population wants. On the surface this appears to be a very good thing, most people are happy as well as flouroushing. These people who are having so much success often move into a power postion within the society. Not wanting to leave this position they often oppress the people who have opposing views within the society in the hopes that if they can muffle these views and blame them for all the societies shortcomings fast enough that nobody will start to side with these rebels and, there will ultimately be no change in society.
Oppresion will inevitably end in retaliation. Countless times throughout history there have been accounts of revolution by the oppressed peoples. What seems to happen in many cases is that the leader of the majority will declare themselves dictator. Once the dictator is established then the group of people will start to oppose him because he no longer represents the people, he only represents himself.
