Imagine a world where when you drive a car and you don’t see any sign boards. Will you know where you are going or where you are? Imagine a world without any written communication. Is it possible to live a comfortable life there? This is why literacy is very important in everyone’s life.
What does literacy mean? When asked this question to my friend Nick, who I interviewed for this assignment, he gave me a simple and straight forward answer “learning to read and write”.
Schooling is essential in every person’s life because school helps people get literate and educated. When asked Nick whether his school was essential for his reading and writing he replied “Yes, it was. Not only are the reading and writing classes important but also other classes like science classes, religious classes, history classes and various other classes because they all include reading and writing. In order to comprehend these classes you really have to understand the concept of reading and writing.”
“Did you find your reading and writing difficult during your schooling?”
“Yes it was difficult in the beginning. It used to be really frustrating when asked to read something in class and there would be one word that tripped you and you couldn’t pronounce that word or couldn’t read as quick as other kids at school. It would be embarrassing sometimes.”
Literacy is very important in every person’s life. It allows us to stay educated on current events, past events, scientific information. We also won’t be able to read about other people’s thoughts and experiences.
I asked my friend about the people who about the people who encouraged him to read and write. He replied that his teachers, parents and siblings were the main people behind him being literate. His mom used to read bed time stories to him which would also encourage him to read those books later.
Some people say that “illiteracy is the main cause of backwardness
