Claire Padron Women’s Studies Response to Iron Jawed Angels

Iron Jawed Angels absolutely left me speechless. The fact that I am turning eighteen this week, and I have never been taught what exactly happened while women were trying to get the 19th Amendment passed. I was so shocked and disappointed in our world. Alice Paul is honestly such an amazing and inspiring woman. I had no idea exactly who she was before I took this class. It is honestly one of my favorite movies I have ever seen in school. This movie was very interesting and contains a powerful message about what women could do if they put their minds to it. Life before the 19th Amendment was so different. Although some is still the same, it is definitely a lot better than what it was. I had no idea who Susan B. Anthony was before this class and well as the NAWSA. It is truly difficult for me to understand how someone so influential, could be so unknown. After watching this movie I felt inspired to start fighting for something that I have always wanted. Anything in this life is possible. You cannot expect things to change for things to be handed to you. You have to work for it no matter how hard the struggle may be. When you work for something and you finally achieve it, there is no better feeling. As I turn 18 on October 3rd, I will be able to legally vote. I cannot wait to be able to have that right. If it wasn’t for Alice Paul, we would not be able to have our own rights. I believe that I should have learned about this influential story a long time ago! Middle schools should teach about this period in history a lot further. Seeing food shoved down the ladies mouth in the movie was absolutely sick. It was hard to watch. I do not think I would personally be able to be that strong. I give Alice Paul and all the ladies who stood up with her, so much credit. They are such strong and courageous individuals. My dream is to be a country singer. I have been trying for years.
