Religion has been around for a very long time, but controversy seems to surround it. How many times have each and every one of you read, seen, or even heard about conflict, which is primarily based around religion. But conflict due to religion is not usually an issue whilst one is in school, and after all this talk is about the issue of whether religious education should be banned from schools. And I strongly believe that religious education has no part in the schooling education system/natural curriculum.
Firstly, I wouldn’t have a problem with schools teaching religious education if all religions/belief systems are taught equally from a non-biased point of view. However, that can never be achieved, and therefore it is unfair that some religions/ beliefs are given more importance than others. The only way to amend the problem of determining which religions are more important is to teach all religions for equal amounts of time. However, this is impossible, as there are hundreds of religions, and so the easiest option and fairest option would be to get rid of the teaching of RE in schools.
Also, based on the last point of schools not being able to teach all religions equally, surely the decision on whether one wants to learn about religion and beliefs is up to a child. And therefore RE should not be taught in schools, but infact it is the decision of the individual on whether they want to focus and learn about religions and beliefs. So the best way to put this into action is to use the option of independent education rather than having a usually bias teacher explain it to them.
Religious Education unfortunately can be a way of brainwashing people – telling people what is wrong what is right – without going into detail. However, a person is capable of making his or her own decisions, and RE doesn’t make it easier, nor does it make it harder – so exactly what is the point of it? .
