The movie roots was based on the book roots. Roots was written by Alex Haley’s family line from his ancestor kunta kinte. Alex Haley took twelve years took complete his search for his roots. But just after his book came out he got an offer to make roots a movie, and the movie was called roots.

Kunta was born in the village of juffure in Gambia in west Africa in 1750. Kunta was the first of four sons of Omoro and his wife Binta Kebba. Omore was a mandeka warrior. But before kunta could be a man he had to complete manhood training. This was a must for ever boy to become a man, he had to complete multiple tasks. One of the task was to catch a bird but with out killing it. One day when kunta leaves his village to find wood to make a drum, when he is attacked by four men who surround him and take him captive. Kunta wake’s up to find himself blindfolded bound and taken prisoner of the white men. The white men branding him with a hot iron. He and others are put on a slave ship for a four month journey to America.
140 Africans begin the journey, and 98 including Kinte are still alive when they arrive in Maryland. Kunta was sold to a Virginia plantation the owner renames him and call’s him Toby. During the remainder of his life Kunta never completely gives up his dreams of freedom and he tried to escape two times even after part of his foot is chopped off. After being captured following an escape attempt, slave catchers give him a choice to be castrated or to lose part of his foot. He eventually marries another slave named Bell Waller and has a daughter named Kizzy, means to "stay put". Kunta didn't want her to ever be taken from him. When Kizzy is in her late teens, she is sold away to North Carolina when her masters discover that she had written a fake traveling pass for a young slave boy she was in love with. She
