Learning Theory and Perspectives
As discussed within the intro to this discussion post, it said, “throughout the past several
decades, the understanding of how we learn has been defined and redefined.” (Ashford,
2016) Within this discussion we are asked to evaluate and discuss the applicability of social
learning theory and Bloom’s taxonomy to the concepts of how we learn. Within my evaluation
of Bloom’s Taxonomy is established within the cognitive learning process. The person that
established this theory was Benjamin Bloom, his theory establishes different objectives that
allow the person to establish an ability to use critical thinking. When this theory was first
establish in 1956, there were six layers that were created within a pyramid style starting from the
bottom as listed below, knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and
evaluation. This theory was later revised in 2000 to be remembering, understanding, applying,
analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The way I understand this pyramid style process is it is step
starting from the lower more simply processes first and then as you move up the pyramid the
greater the cognitive ability.
Then within analyzing how social learning theory and Bloom’s taxonomy incorporate
cognitivism and constructivism into their frameworks. The work of Albert Bandura’s established
“the social learning theory…which…emphasizes the importance of observing and modeling the
behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of others…as Bandura stated in (1977) “Learning
would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the
effects of their own actions to inform them what to do.” (Bandura 1977, … Culatta, 2015) But
