Imagine the Everest Mountain in front that you have to conquer before you can catch a glimpse of scene at peak of it. It is not that easy and might consume us a lengthy of time. I used to be unable and uninterested in most of the activities that require physical fitness. I was scare to join any outdoor activities such as hiking and jungle trekking because I was always incapable of completing the whole journey and would be a burden for my team members. However, it is not impossible for me to cope with this problem. “As in any sports, if you want to enjoy it, you have to practice until you master it” is written in “Barriers” by Ronaldo Niella. I agree with Ronaldo as I have slowly improved in the skills of hiking and some other physical activities after undergoing National Service for three months. Today, I have another problem that is very similar to it, that is the problem of communicating using English with some of my friends and lecturers in INTEC, a college that uses English as the main communicative language. Nevertheless, I always believe that practice make perfect. So, I try to converse more in English with my friends and lecturers in daily conversation, practice speech and presentation in English in front of the class, and read English materials, listen to English songs and watch English movie.

Speaking in English with my friends and lecturers in daily conversation is the best way for me to practice English speaking. I grew up in a Chinese society and everyone around me speaking the Chinese language. I was Chinese educated as I studied in a Chinese school with majority of Chinese students and teachers. In addition, I used to speak only in Mandarin with my friends and teachers in daily conversation when I was in primary and secondary school. Even though we learned mathematics and science subjects in English and had five periods of English classes a week, we didn’t speak a word of English.
