Recently, the whole world has been suffered from an economic downturn. Most countries have been influenced in many ways, which is a dramatic plunge in employment rate. Innumerable people are having trouble with job loss, which is a significant life event for them. Generally, loss job not only has many negative consequences on people’s mental health, such as stress, loss of self-esteem and psychological illnesses, but also influence people’s family mental health.
First of all, being unemployed produces stress because of financial pressure. Without enough of an income, the barest necessities are hard to afford. That financial loss easily creates an atmosphere of stress and oppression. Psychologists call stress “unemployment stress”. In a detailed prospective study, scientists focused on the relationship between unemployment and stress, which found that unemployed people become more anxious and depressed than employed people, especially for men (Linn, Sandifer& Stein 502). Furthermore, if people have something to worry about, they cannot help thinking about that, which must influence people’s sleep quality. And then bad sleep quality and stress will set up a vicious circle destroying people’s mental health. Therefore, people who lose jobs and do not have a primary source of income would create more anxiety, which means loss job is a stressful event that can influence people’s mental health.
What is more, job loss makes people lose their self-esteem. Compared with employed people, unemployed people have lower self-esteem because of the increased feelings of guilt and failure. Losing a job will be a failure in somebody’s life. Too much failure will destroy people’s confidence and make them have no courage to face the troubles which they are suffering from.
