The Mall of America is largest indoor retail and entertainment complex in the United States today. They are the most famous mall in the nation. How did they become so successful? They had to target locals and tourist to come to the mall. Why go to that mall when there are mall closer, less crowded, and smaller making it easier to find the stores you want without having to make a day trip out of it. In order to stay successful they need to target the locals. One of the best ways to target locals is to have local stores operate in the mall rather than the national chains that typically dominate malls. Have local events take place in the mall that only locals would be interested in. Targeting tourist is another important thing to do. Why should I travel to that mall when there is one a few miles from my house? Offer things that no other mall does. Be the extreme in everything you do. Have 5 star restaurant in the food court. They offer camps for kids, Lego Land, and much more that know one else offers.
Market research is important for every company. How can they change to what the people want if they don't know what they want? For the Mall of America doing surveys in the building would be the best methods. The locals more than likely get too many calls from telemarketers and you don't want to call tourist. Surveys either in store or doing through email would be the best ways to learn how to grow.
Social media is one of the best things to happen to business. The Mall of America should be using Twitter and Facebook to tell people what big events are going on in the stores. Instagram can be useful to promote what has happened in the mall that way people can see how cool the place is and think I should go there. There are over 1.3 billion monthly users on Facebook.
