Gender Discrimination
According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia the definition of discrimination is this: the prejudicial treatment of an individual based on their membership - or perceived membership - in a certain group or category. It involves the actual behaviors towards groups such as excluding or restricting members of one group from opportunities that are available to another group. The focus on this informative paper will be gender discrimination. From the beginning of time women and girls have been dealing with discrimination. From birth, parents interact differently with children depending on their sex, and through this interaction parents can instill different values or traits in their children on the basis of what is standard for their sex. “Feminine” toys such as dolls often reinforce interaction, nurturing, and closeness, “masculine” toys such as cars or fake guns often reinforce independence, competitiveness, and aggression. Because of these different interactions as children, women have been devalued in society because of their emotional reactions, and values. Women in the workforce are not seen as reliable because they take time off to have their children and care for their family in times of need.
Through the years gender discrimination awareness has been highlighted in the United States. It wasn’t until 1920 that women were allowed to vote. In 1872, Rochester, New York Susan B. Anthony registered and voted in the election. As planned, she was arrested for “knowingly, wrongfully and unlawfully voin] for a representative to the Congress of the United States,” she was convicted by the State of New York, and fined $100. In 1920 the19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave all American women the right to vote. It was the beginning of change in our country.
