The Organizational Culture of Nordstrom

Every organization has a culture of its own. For this assignment, we had to research a company whose organizational structure we admire or would like to be a part of. I chose an organization that I admire and that I would like to be a part of. Nordstrom was in Chapter Sixteen of our text because of it’s customer service. Also, I happened to come across Nordstrom in my search for a company, and I am so glad that I chose to further my research. Everything about Nordstrom is appealing. Nordstrom was founded in 1901 and is one of the nation’s leading fashion retailers. This appeals to me all the more. What woman isn’t fond of fashion? Nordstrom is so much more than a fashion retailer. It is a family and an active part of the community. This paper will discuss exactly what I admire about Nordstrom. Our textbook states that organizational behavior is “a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations”. (Robbins, 2005) Nordstrom has definitely lived up to this definitely lived up to this definition. In review of their culture, I found a few appealing aspects. According to the Nordstrom website, I found a few parts of their culture to be exactly what I like in a company. To name the few be honest, we’re family, and my favorite use good judgment. Honestly is definitely the best policy. I live by this in all aspects of my life. You spend a large portion of your life at work, therefore it makes sense to refer to your co-workers as family. Nordstrom also has an open door policy. Employees are urged to express themselves. They value their customers. I have worked in retail in the past and the customer is always right. Diversity is also a part of Nordstrom. They believe that they should cater to the communities that they represent. These cultures are what appeal to me the most at Nordstrom.
