Dane Martin Exploring the Social Sciences The “okies” or those of scotch-irish decent are a people who descend from battle hardened outcasts. They have been fighting and migrating since the beginning of their existence. And because of their rowdy “fight the power” attitude, the scotch-irish are a non-conformist race of people that refuse to adapt to the social “norm” and have become social outcasts for it. Since the late 1200’s the scotch-irish have been fighting for independence from England the English fought with the scotch-irish from 1296 until the treaty of Berwick in 1357 but the fighting between the Scotts and the English didn’t really stop until 1371. The scotch-irish was a warrior culture where in order to obtain power you simply took it wasn’t something that was handed down to you no matter your reputation like the way it was in England. People like William Wallace who is the character basis for the film Braveheart. He was the leader in leading the scotch-irish against the English in the wars of Scottish independence until his capture and execution in London on August 23 1305. He was a farmer who ended up leading the entire army of Scotland a perfect example of a man who rose to power in the warrior culture of scotch irish. The scotch-irish was fighting for their independence because they refused to conform to the rule of England. After the Americanrevolution the scotch-irish were again at the wrong end of a deal getting hit the whisky tax and obviously all the best whisky is produced by scotch-irish families. This was to help repay the debt the country had suffered from the revolution. The tax eventually led to the Whiskey Rebellion of 1790. Again the scotch-irish not willing to conform to the society at hand and fighting their way to get what they felt was right.
