Race, culture, age, gender, sexual orientation, spiritual or religious beliefs, and disabilities are each a puzzle piece that make up the puzzle of diversity rather that be in an organization with clients or the people who make up an organization. Diversity allows an organization to equip themselves with the right amount of tools to make this inside of the agency strong as well as the outside resulting in a stronger impact on the community and clients that it seeks to impact.
To begin, diversity is something that happens in an everyday life, but a huge impact that can be made is when you are in a workplace environment. A company is made up of a wide variety of different types of people which will bring to life the word diversity and what exactly that is made up of. I think back to a time in a previous job when the ethics of diversity was pushed aside and the word of decimation came fourth. I was working as a customer service manager and the General Manager was looking for one person for my department to expand it as well as one more person for the front desk where the guest of our company would be greeted. I look back and I remember interviewing a large amount of very qualified people but Bob the General Manager had certain things that he was wanting in the person to be hired. I specifically remember after an interview I went to Bob and told him that I felt that this lady would be the perfect fit she had all the background that we were looking for in our new employee. However, Bob had something else in mind; he stated that the lady was too old and unattractive. I immediately felt that this was something that needed to be address, but the whole company back him up because he was the boss and everyone lived in fear of being fired. So the interviewing process went on to be too old, too ugly, talks too funny, not a female, not the right kind of race; I mean the list of discrimination was just unbelievable.
