People Will Not Treasure Something Until Loose It
"Silver Water" is a story which written by the first person of Violet. She has a neurotic sister, Rose. At the beginning of the story, the author wrote “My sister’s voice was like mountain water in a silver pitcher; the clear blue beauty of it cools you and lifts you up beyond your heat, beyond your body.” Then, he recalls being with her sister at the age of they were teenagers. It described a dulcet time of Rose. She has a beautiful voice, and also is attractive. By reflecting on their teenage time, we can imagine Rose and her voice vividly. That is also why the title of this story is “Silver Water”. Actually Rose’s deliration gives her whole family boundless suffering. After her death, Violet does not want to reflecting on the suffering anymore, so he tries to remember the teenage time, the happy time of her sister and her. The deepest impress is Rose’s voice. He considered it as water which is flashing silver color.
Rose experienced her first psychotic problem at the age of fifteen. She would not come home after school, but instead she would go into the woods behind the house until her mother would come and get her. This went on for three weeks, after which the mother told David, the father, that Rose was going crazy.
A conversation between the mother and father show the helpless:“What’s there to say? David, she’s going crazy. She doesn’t need a heart-to-heart talk with Mom, she needs a hospital.” There isn’t a mother who wants her daughter to leave her and stay in hospital, but Galen did. Also several scenes that impressed me are about the mother. When the father and Rose sat down, she had already packed. When the father’s friends dropped by to offer free consultations and recommendations, she and Rose’s suitcase were already in the car. When they decided to go, she hugged Violet and told him that they will come back without Rose tonight. It seems that Galen was despairing at that time.
