Dear Dad:
I have a serious thing to talk to you about, and you probably know where this is going because I have talked to you about it before. Why do you smoke? Do you really realize the effect that it has on you and your family, and your wallet?
Smoking is very bad for your health and tobacco smoke consists of gases and particles. It contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds. More than 250 of these chemicals are known to be harmful, and at least 69 are known to cause cancer. The types of cancer that can be caused by smoking are lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, and stomach cancers. Now granted a lot of things lead to cancer, but if you were to stop smoking thats one less thing that you could have cause cancer in you. Smoking doesn’t just affect you health wise it also affects your children, and anyone around you while smoking, this is called second hand smoke. “It is estimated that each year in the United States 42,000 people die from heart disease, 3,400 die from lung disease, asthma related problems in up to 1 million asthmatic children, around 150,00 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in children under 18 months, with around 10,000 hospitalizations each year”( Second Hand Smoke) . It’s not just the inward health issues but smoking also ruins your teeth, turns your fingernails and fingers yellow. (Lordqvist) It can also cause premature aging and wrinkles. Honestly, when you are smoking, I hate being around you because it makes it hard for me to breath especially, when we are in the car.
Now you may be thinking to your self, whats the point of stopping smoking now? “Twenty minutes after you stop smoking you start to feel the difference between smoking and not smoking. Your heart rate will drop back to normal. Two hours after you quit, your heart rate and blood pressure will have decreased to normal levels. Your peripheral circulation may also improve.
