Thesis: Pizza has a vast and interesting history few know of
Attention Getter: Loved by many pizza has a rich heritage and has been around since the beginning of time in some form or another.
Establish Credibility: As a long time pizza eater I researched the web for many hours to discover the vast history of this delicious food.
Preview Statement: While researching pizza I found out that it has a vast history. While pizza as we know it began in Italy, pizza actually existed way before that.
Transitional Statement: Let me tell you where pizza actually began.
Main Point I: Pizza, the way we know it today, comes from focaccia, a flat bread. Focaccia has been prepared in different forms since man first cultivated grain in 1 bc. It was often garnished with herbs, olives, fat, raisin, honey, and nuts. In fact, the word for pizza in Italian identifies any type of flat bread or pie prepared either fried or baked. (Pizza: A Brief History, a Few Interesting Facts and Jokes, 2014) Pizza or one of its forms has been a basic part of the Mediterranean diet since the Stone Age. This earliest form of pizza was crude bread that was baked beneath the stones of the fire. After cooking, it was seasoned with a variety of different toppings and used instead of plates and utensils to sop up broth or gravies. Some say that the idea of using bread as a plate came from the Greeks who ate flat round bread baked with an assortment of toppings. It was eaten by the working man and his family because it was a thrifty and convenient food. In the Sixth Century, B.C., at the height of the Persian Empire, it is said that the soldiers of Darius the Great accustomed to lengthy marches, baked a kind of bread flat upon their shields and then covered it with cheese and dates.
