• What is a ‘Bibliography’?
A ‘Bibliography’ is a list of sources used to produce an assignment (essay). It usually includes all the sources you have consulted.
• What is a ‘List of References’?
Some tutors ask for a ‘List of References’ '' that is, a list of sources that you have cited (referred to) in your assignment (essay). It usually includes only those sources you directly mention/refer to in your writing.
Check which your department or tutor prefers.
How is it presented?
Alphabetically by author’s surname
Unless instructed otherwise DO NOT list books, articles and websites in separate
lists (check with your department guidelines)
Where does it appear?
At the end of the essay
What information do you need to include? Follow your Study Skills Handbook:
Books: there are FIVE basic pieces of information you should include
1. Name(s) of author(s)
2. Year of publication in round brackets
3. Title of book, underlined, bold or printed in italics
4. Place of publication
5. Name of publisher
Articles: slightly different - SIX basic pieces of information you should include
1. Name(s) of author(s)
2. Year of publication in round brackets
3. “Title of article”, often placed within quotation marks [check your department]
4. Title of journal/magazine, underlined, bold or printed in italics
5. Issue [for example, Volume 53 September, but check the format required]
6. Pages [starting page to final page of the article, for example 23-45]
Electronic journal articles: as above, but with TWO additional pieces of information
7. CD-ROM provider or Online resource [e.g. Project Muse]

8. Date you checked the article '' important for online/internet materials as access or content may change [Accessed 2 February 2005]...
