There is pressure for teenagers and young women to be perfect, these women are going to the extreme to live up to what society defines as being beautiful. According to the Webster’s dictionary the word beautiful is defined as having a quality of beauty. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons almost 219,000 cosmetic surgical procedures were performed on teenagers between the ages of 13-19 in 2010. Society puts such an emphasize that in order to be famous, loved by others, and have the “perfect” life and career that being beautiful is the only way to achieve success. Cosmetic companies spent 94 billion a dollars a year(www.good.is, Jan 20,2011), on products and advertising to sell false hopes that wearing their brand of cosmetics will make a person physically more appealing, and mentally more confident. But what the cosmetic companies are not telling women that some of their products are tested on animals. According to PETA chemicals are put into the cornea of animals and measured to see what length of time it takes for the chemical to burn.(www.peta.org, 2012).
The cosmetic companies are also not telling consumers that some to the ingredients can be harmful to the skin and cause a condition called dermatitis, that is a inflammation of the skin that makes the skin itch and causes a rash,(www.averskincare.com, 2004), and cosmetic companies are stating that wearing makeup may enhance the physically look, but it cannot fix what is broken on the inside. The fashion industry making young women think that model who super skinny are beautiful, so these young women on their quest to beautiful are extreme dieting, binging and purging, and having cosmetic surgery. In 2010 the Australia fashion industry has decided to ban super skinny models from the way because these models making the community of young women unhappy about their body images.(www.newspress.me, June 30,2010).
