Heavy Construction Technology:
Bridge Construction & Technology (Suspension Bridges)
b) Brief introduction (one paragraph)
Bridge construction is one of the most phenomenal aspects of modern civil engineering technology. Basically, a bridge is a structure built for the purpose of providing passage over a certain obstacle which could be a body of water or steep valley where suspension bridges are used predominantly for most applications. Our research will mostly focus over suspension bridge which is a type of bridge in which the deck (the load-bearing portion) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. However, other bridge types such as cable stayed bridges, steel arch bridges and segmental bridge construction will also be looked upon.
c) Scope of research (one paragraph)
Several designs all serve unique purposes and are applicable to a specified situation. Our research will study the different techniques and methods of constructing a suspension bridge structure such as pre-cast, cast in-situ methods and other methods as well. The research will also discuss about several erection techniques for the cables of suspension bridge, the deck structure and other structural parts. In addition to that, we will also scrutinize its potential benefits over other bridge types and disadvantages compared with other bridges all of which would be related to their construction techniques and methods, their cost & performance and other criteria as well. A case study of a prominent large-scale project will be presented providing details of the different construction techniques and methods used in it.
