In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, there are two boys who lead the rest of the boys on the island. The two boys have different leading styles and approaches differently when making the boys do the jobs to survive on the island. Ralph leads with charisma and knows what the boys need to survive. But the boys are young and don’t know what’s important. On the other hand, Jack knows what the boys want and gives them what they want. He knows how to entertain the crowd. Ralph and Jack’s leadership have very different results.
Ralph wants to get rescued from the island and knows what the boys need to do survive. He knows the importance of the conch, the fire, and the roles. While the other boys had no idea about what to do on the island, Ralph knew exactly what to do because of Piggy’s intelligence. When they first arrived, the boys were in need of someone who would tell them what to do because they were used to that type of life. They elected Ralph to be the chief or the leader because he was the only one who seemed to know what was going on. The boys are young and do not know the importance of the fire. When Ralph tells them that they need to keep the fire going, the boys listen to Jack, who is telling them that they need meat. Ralph doesn’t have the intelligence and speaking skills to convince the boys that being rescued is more important than surviving on the island.
Jack, unlike Ralph, enjoys the time on the island and knows what the boys want rather than what they need. He doesn’t have the charisma, the intelligence, the wit, or the characteristics of a good leader. However, he has the ability to give what the people want and because of that, he has followers. He doesn’t think about the rescue but rather thinks about how to live on the island. Jack tells his choir and the boys that they need meat and fire to cook the meat, not as a signal.
