Regional Economy Paper: ASEAN
ASEAN is the abbreviation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN is abbreviated in English because it is the official language of the trading bloc. English was chosen as the official language because it is the most common second language spoken among the different nations within the block and their foreign trade partners. The ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization comprised of 10 Southeast Asian countries. The ASEAN was originally formed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand in 1967. Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam joined several years later comprising the 10 countries that the ASEAN is made of presently. The goal of the ASEAN is to accelerate the growth of social progress, the economy, and cultural development among its members. The ASEAN also aims to provide a Platform for member countries to discuss opportunities, differences, and regional stability peacefully (ASEAN, 2010).
