Imagine the only way to feed and support your family was to hear the constant bellowing and brutal slaughter of something that breathes and functions just as you do! This being a theme in the poetry works of composer Robert Gray. Gray typically known for his use of various aspects relating to human senses and emotions throughout his poetry is effective in provoking deep thought and emotion in his readers. Gray uses a range of auditory, visual and tactile sensory indicators accompanied with various other techniques. These techniques directly relate to the human senses and lifestyle in which humans live and associate. Gray uses this effectively to convey themes and journeys in his poetry making the readers ponder the events often stirring deep thought and emotion. This allows the reader to gain their own individual understanding of the poetry and what Gray is trying to express. The themes of the environment and the world around us are major themes of Gray’s poetry this is evident in the poems; The Meatworks and Late Ferry. They are similar in the fact that they both follow the same persona as all of Gray’s poetry, yet different in the fact that they both represent a different environment and setting; Late Ferry takes place on a quiet and soothing harbour in a ferry while in contrast The meatworks takes place in a gruesome and sometimes considered inhumane environment.
