A ROSE FOR EMILY INTRODUCTION “A Rose For Emily” is a story of a Black, Southerner American lady who lived a most mysterious, distant life. She is Miss Emily Grierson. She is an only child of a very strict, aristocraticfather and the niece of a so-called crazy aunt. The Grierson’s have been said to have projected an elite image, a contained decorum in accordance to the morals and values of the classic culture of the American countryside of the 30’s. So, Miss Emily maintained to be a recluse, distant, sort of un-neighborly. When her father died, Miss Emily did not allow anyone to share her grief. She went through life just being attended to by Toby, her loyal manservant. She kept to herself in her old, tattered house. It was once the symbol of elegance in their Jefferson town. But it depreciated together with the way Miss Emily and her life depreciated in her constant sense of remorse, loneliness, pain and resentments. Then she met; was befriended and presumably fell in love with a visiting, transient pavement construction worker, Homer Barron. They shared moments together. Everyone in town thought they will eventually get married. But when the construction was completed, Mr. Homer left town and Miss Emily. This again brought loneliness and pain to Miss Emily. Surprisingly, Homer came back and was admitted to the house of Miss Emily. The townspeople never saw and never knew anything about Miss Emily and Mr. Homer anymore - until the death of Miss Emily. For after her burial, the neighbors found out that she kept in her room the dead body of her love - Mr Homer Barron. The story unfolded with the fact that Miss Emily poisoned Mr. Homer so that he will never leave her again. So Miss Emily just stayed inside her room, inside her old, lonely house together with body of the dead Mr. Homer lying on her dead all through those many years.
