Author’s Purpose Essay:
“I don’t mind a nice shy girl but I don’t like fooling around. Part of those words were spoken with a slight rhythmic lift, and Connie somehow recognized them – the echo of a song from last year, about a girl rushing into her boyfriend’s arms and coming home again” (Oates 54). The idea behind Oates writing this quote is to explain how Connie’s thoughts and beliefs were all a misleading impression of reality. It could be inferred that she only believed what was convenient to her lifestyle. Later on the story, she realized that hearing the lyrics from her favorite songs were no longer appealing to her because of how Arnold interpreted them. Although Connie seemed to understand the situation she was in towards the end of the story, it was too late. The author’s purpose is to express thoughts and to inform feelings.
For instance, the author expresses his thoughts in various ways throughout the story. Oates seems to express himself mostly through symbolism. The way Oates sets up the story and describes this particular space brings me to this conclusion. An example of this is, “The kitchen window had never had a curtain, after three years, there were dishes ion the sick for her to do-probably- and if you ran across the table you would probably feel something there” (Oates54) This quotes supports the idea behind the kitchen having symbolism and how Connie’s previous thoughts and beliefs were unreal because she didn’t recognized many features in her kitchen. “She was...
