Should the Burka be banned in the UK?

The burka is a Muslim garment loosely covering the entire body, leaving a mesh cloth for the eyes. It is worn in many Muslim countries by women but is now being worn more and more in the UK, even if the women's mothers do not choose to wear it. There is controversy on whether the Quaran actually specifies for women to cover their bodies in the Islamic faith. It does say to act modestly in society, and for men and women to dress plainly, but there is no mention of the burka or the need to wear it. There are however, a few mentions of the hijab. It is said that Mohammed's wives wore hijabs, but does that mean Muslim women must go to such extremities to conceal their bodies?
In late 2010, France and Belgium called a ban on all facial coverings, including burkas, nijabs (same as burka but a slit for the eyes) hijabs and balaclavas, however the ban did not have a great reception at first. Some women were outraged and offended by this ban against their culture, and many women were suspect to discrimination and abuse, both verbal and physical. A French woman called Hind Ahmas spoke about the effects of the ban on herself and her daughter. She said, "My quality of life has seriously deteriorated since the ban. In my head, I have to prepare for war every time I step outside, prepare to come up against people who want to put a bullet in my head. The politicians claimed they were liberating us; what they've done is to exclude us from the social sphere. Before this law, I never asked myself whether I'd be able to make it to a cafe or collect documents from a town hall. One politician in favour of the ban said niqabs were 'walking prisons'. Well, that's exactly where we've been stuck by this law." This statement shows that banning the burka in the UK would create some upset in the Muslim communities, and this upset could evolve into protests and violence.
