Haig A. Bosmajian once said, "Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt me" (Bosmajian, 4). As children, many of us are taught to just put up with the "potty-mouths", but we all hate are no good. When obscene words are directed at us, they can cause just as much pain, if not more, than a hit. When people start to use obscenities with ethnic or racial slurs, it can push some sensitive buttons in all of us. From my experiences, the combination of obscenities and racial slurs cause the most extreme negative reactions from people. In this world, humans come in a rainbow of colors: sandy yellows, reddish-tans, creamy whites, pale pinks. And who among us is not curious about the skin colors, hair textures, bodily structures and facial features associated with racial background. Why do many Africans have deep black skin, while that of most Europeans is pale pink? I believe that People of the world are part of different races, which share different biologically transmitted traits that members of society deem socially significant. Nineteenth-century biologist labeled people with relatively light skin and fine hair as Caucasians; they called those with darker skin and coarser, curlier hair Negroid, Negro and Nigger (Kennedy). All these ā€œNā€ words are in fact related to each other, and share the same meaning long time ago for all black people in this world.
The word "nigger" is a key term in American culture. It is a profoundly hurtful racial slur meant to stigmatize African Americans; on occasion, it also has been used against members of other racial or ethnic groups, including Chinese, other Asians, East Indians, Arabs and darker-skinned people.
