The purpose of this assignment is to choose a suitable topic involving stereotyping, bias, or prejudice and to write an essay in which you attempt to prove the truth of your thesis statement. Remember that the purpose of the essay is to prove the truth of the thesis. Among many possible topics are the following:
Sexual stereotyping
Native American stereotyping
Cultural stereotyping
Stereotyping based on appearance: hair color, weight, height, and so on
Racial stereotyping
Ethnic stereotyping
Gender stereotyping
Racial profiling
Gender bias
Stereotyping in advertising
Stereotyping in movies
Stereotyping in music or music videos
Stereotyping handicaps or disabilities
Stereotyping of religions or beliefs
Stereotyping in politics
Stereotyping and prejudice
Stereotyping and racism
Stereotyping people in prison
Stereotyping people in the military
Stereotyping professions/jobs
Stereotyping students
Stereotyping husbands or wives
Again, these topics are examples. You may choose one of these, or you may choose a different topic; however, the topic must be about stereotyping, and it must express one side of an issue that has at least two logically arguable sides. Remember, though, that you will not mention any other approach to the topic other than the one expressed in the thesis. The purpose of the essay will be to prove the truth of the thesis statement, not to refute any other ideas.
The completed essay should be about three pages long, or about 750 words, should be typed and double-spaced, and should follow Modern Language Association guidelines for writing and the additional guidelines given in the course syllabus. Consult two sources in writing this essay, no fewer and no more, and be certain to use MLA-style in-text citations and a works cited page.
