Why do Negros tend to be poorer than their white counterparts? This is an easy question to answer. There are three types of men in this culture; the ones who want to work, the ones who do not want to work, and the disabled. The majority of the Negros that are poor either do not work or refuse to work. These street corner Negros, as Liebow refers to them as, sometimes work and sometimes do not. This is a major flaw in their character.
On the other hand, some Negros do try their hardest to do the right thing and work and do not try to come up with excuses why they cannot. Even if these men are sick and about to die they will still bust their butts out in a steel mill or on a farm as long as they have to so that their families can live another day.
Some of these Negros cannot work. Some are disabled, cannot find work (maybe because of something they have done in their past), or just due to family reasons. This still does not mean that other members of that family cannot go into the fields or mills in their father’s place, being as though this is mostly did most of the work outside the household. It has just got be instilled into the persons mind that they have to do what they have to do to survive.
Why do Negros tend to think that poverty is hereditary? Some Negros believe this because since they were young they have been in poverty all their lives and the neighborhoods they live in are poverty stricken as well. This shows them that they may not ever learn a good enough trade to get out of poverty that they were born into it and will stay in it until the day they die. This is untrue because everyone is in control of their own destiny and knows what they can and cannot achieve, which anyone can achieve what they want if they put their mind to it.
Not just Negros are like this. There are many cultures out there that have grown up in substandard living conditions, have not had central heating and air, or even a hot bath. Some of...
