Team Dynamics

Conflict happens in every part of the world, even in the work environment. According to Dictionary.com, a conflict is a “collision or disagreement”, mainly between two or more people (Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1), n.d.). In some cases, it is possible to agree to disagree, no matter what the disagreement is about. The subject can be controversial to where both sides argue a good point. In other cases, it could be a personality disagreement. Everybody has different views and the way they see things. If there is no possible way to find a neutral position on the matter due to a personality differential, a conflict resolution can be agreed upon. “Conflict resolution is a win-win situation that offers people an alternative to resolving problems and conflict in a peaceful manner.” (What Is Conflict Resolution, 2009) Sometimes a mediator may be used for the parties involved to try and solve the issues at hand. A mediator is a trained person that is present to guide the parties to talk about the conflict in hopes of a resolution (What Is Conflict Resolution, 2009). They are more like a referee in a sports game. When things get too out of control, the mediator can step in and take control of the situation. They can calm the parties involved and turn the subject to a more sensible topic.
Conflict occurs for many different reasons. In personality types, some people are leaders while the others are followers. If there are two leaders within a group, they may clash to be the more dominate of the group. They both may have a strong opinion on something and can not come to a middle agreement. If there are no leaders within the group, the group may often become confused about the direction the must go in and turn into a conflict about what to do. In turn, the project may fall behind schedule or veer off task totally.
