It goes without saying that there are various advantages of taking an ESL course. To my mind, the advantages can be improving one’s academic writing, making more friends and preparing for the university courses. Fist of all, taking an ESL course can improve one’s academic writing. Most of the people try to learn the second language by themselves either from a website or the library; they usually need a teacher to tell them the correct way to write and speak academically. For example, student hand in writing in the class and the next time, the teacher will give them back essay with feedback. Thus, students can find out the weakness quickly and try to improve themselves. Second, taking an ESL course, students can make more friends who want to improve language skills too. Having the same purpose with their classmates, students can have a lot of common topics and try to meet each other frequently out of the class. For instance, students can hang out and keep practicing the spoken skills. It gives them more chances to speak and would really improve their ability quickly. Third, by taking an ESL course and improving their English skills, it benefits students for preparing the university courses. All the university courses are much more difficult. Without excellent English skills, students can not communicate well with their classmates and professors, and academic exchange will also be affected. We can, therefore, come to the conclusion that taking an ESL course is really helpful in students’ progress at university academically and socially.
