The Allegiance

The Allegiance

Every nation proudly names several items as symbols of their country. One of these symbols in the United States is the Pledge of Allegiance. The words “under God” in the pledge have caused controversy on whether it is separation of church and state. Therefore, public schools requiring the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance may be unconstitutional to some individuals’ beliefs.
The Pledge of Allegiance was originally thought to be written in 1892 by a Baptist minister named Francis Bellamy, but the phrase was published anonymously and not copyrighted either. The pledge was published in a Boston youth magazine called “The Youth’s Companion” on September 8, 1892. It was included in an article written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America (Baer). The Pledge of Allegiance originally read “I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all.” The pledge became a popular daily recitation in most public schools after being published in the magazine (“Pledge”).
