Individual behavior and communication play an integral role in companies today, both large and small. How a person controls his or her individual behavior and communicates with teammates, coworkers, and managers is important to not only their personal success within the company but is also important to the overall success of the company. Communication is a key factor in the business world. A person must be able to communicate well in order to succeed. A team that exhibits professional individual behavior and communication skills can become a high performance team. In addition to individual behavior and communication, ethical responsibility and diversity are important to a company’s success.
According to the DISC Platinum Rule, four primary behavioral styles exist: dominance, interactive, cautious, and steadiness. The dominance and interactive styles are more fast-paced and direct. These types tend to have a firm handshake, make and keep eye contact, and express opinions easily. The cautious and steadiness styles are slow-paced and indirect. These types are more patient, do not contribute much in a group setting, and do not offer opinions. The dominance and cautious styles are guarded and task-oriented, while the interactive and steadiness styles are more open and people-oriented. The guarded behaviors of the dominance and cautious styles tend to keep feelings private and conversations on topic. The open behaviors of the interactive and steadiness styles show feelings with enthusiasm and will digress in conversations. Learning what style a person is can greatly help with communication among teammates, both by knowing a person’s own style as well as recognizing what style others are.
