Introduction
The dreams are succesions of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The meaning and purpose of the dreams are not yet understood, therefore they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout history.
The scientific study of dreams is known as oneirology, but ¿What is oneirology? The oneirology studies the functions of the brain while you are sleeping, this study can be distinguished from dream analysis in which the aim is to quantitatively study the process of dreams instead of analyzing the meaning of them.
There are two stages in the sleep cycle:
REM (Rapid eye movement).
Rapid eye movement is a normal stage of sleep characterized by the random movement of the eyes. REM sleep is classified in two categories: tonic and phasic.
REM sleep in adult humans typically occupies 20–25% of total sleep, about 90–120 minutes of sleep cycle. During a normal night of sleep, humans usually experience about four or five periods of REM sleep; they are quite short at the beginning of the night and then they turned longer.
A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM.
