In Tennessee Williams story of "The Glass Menagerie" Tom, plays the major role for the family. In the story Tom was the only man in the house and he had to support his family financially. He was not able to peruse his dream to live on his own from the abandonment from his father. Tom younger version was a rebel and only thought of himself and how he wanted to leave his home and make a new one with just him. "I descended the steps of this fire-escape for a last time and followed, from then on, in my father's footsteps, attempting to find in motion what was lost in space" ( Williams 409). He was never able to emotionally leave Laura behind, in his later travels, he frequently felt a connection to her. " Oh, Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me but I am more faithful than I indented to be!" ( Williams 410). Tom's youth experience taught him that family is important no matter what and the choices that he made affected everyone around him.
Tom is one of the characters readers can relate to. As a young kid he has so much on his shoulders, and he can't really make his dreams happen because he has a family to support. As a young boy he was left with his mom and sister to take care of; his dad had left him and ruined his dream. He loves to write and draw. He cannot really achieve his dream of becoming an artist because he has to work at the shoe factory to support his mom and sister.
Unlike the other characters, Tom sometimes addresses the audience directly, when he does this, he explains how angry or happy he is and gives the explanation." I give up all that I dream and being ever!, and you say self- self's all I ever think of" (Williams 374). Sometimes he's going to upset his mother, but a mother is a mother and she's going to forgive him "". In assumption is that he has to be the head of the family and to put food on...
