Project Management as a discipline
For companies finding ways to promote change throughout their organization requires a set of special skills. The skills need to make change happen the right way are project management. According to Author, project management is defined as “the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements (Schwalbe, 2014)”. The goal for project managers is to make sure that projects meet time, specific scope, cost, and quality goals. For project managers this means using efficient use of resources and strategic alignment to complete projects. Moreover, project managers must see the entire process through to need the needs of the people involved in project activities or affected by them.
As a discipline, project management requires project managers to navigate the complexity of processes involved in projects, as well as the turbulences of the business environment. This involves project managers knowing when to adapt or adopt information technology or to make improvements to the business process. Additionally, project managers have to be able to communicate the direction, values and interests to executives, shareholders, and operational levels of the organization. The project manager has to be able to identify the benefit of a project to the organization. The benefit in the organizational context, has to be a robust and logical decision (Besteiro, et al, 2015). In the discipline of project management, one has to be able to make decisions that are regulated by critical success factors, which can be used to increase the probability of success of a project.
In the traditional sense, project managers focus initially on improvements from the triple restrictions: scope, deadline, and cost.
