The story of The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival tells the story of a creature that is so unfamiliar to may Americans, and what many view as a vicious, killing creature. The author takes the reader on a journey through a snowy forest in the Primorski region of Russia where an immense amount of dangerous and rare wildlife can be found. The reader is able to follow the main character of this book, Yuri Trush, a hunter and ranger leading Inspection Tiger, as he seeks to catch the Siberian tiger responsible for killing a poacher named Markov. Trush and his team learn that the tiger has targeted it’s victims by stalking them over periods of time and killing them with no trace left behind.
However, one aspect of this tiger that makes it unique is the odd fashion in which it hunts and lures in it’s victims. Furthermore, the tiger has a particular way of continually catching their attention and luring them in to death. For each victim, we see that the tiger first drags the victim’s mattress out of his cabin, then perches on it, and finally waits for the victim to come home. Once the tiger has successfully captured his prey, he leaves no trace of evidence, as Trush and his team have trouble investigating the murders in order to catch the tiger. This odd method of hunting reflects that of a serial killer, which I found quite odd. As Trush and his team continue to follow the tiger, it becomes unclear weather or not the team is hunting the tiger or vice versa.
In our current generation, we are so caught up in the lifestyle of secluding ourselves to a comfortable environment of city and even country living that secludes us from the natural world, especially that of rare wildlife, like the Siberian tiger. The idea of the wilderness and the animals that inhabit it is so distant to us here in the U.S. and we relate the wilderness with dangerous nature and creatures.
