An important component of businesses worldwide is the management of purchasing and supply. Purchasing and supply management consists of several components, such as project supply, service, and material budgeting from comprehensive requirements, defining how to select the most qualified suppliers and strategies for negotiating prices. Thus leading to the process of purchasing and supply management which consist of the procurement, storage, and monitoring of goods, machinery, supplies, or other raw goods, sold in a store. The purchasing and supply executive, being the person in charge, as well as managing the employees working in this department. For most businesses, specifically retailers, the purchasing and supply management position is one of the most important jobs in observing customer behaviors and making sure the best selling items are available and well-stocked.
Purchasing and supply management is much broader and than the traditional term or the title purchasing clerk, which includes more and a larger variety of responsibilities. The present day manager’s job can include receiving, storage, inspection, scheduling, materials handling, inbound/outbound traffic and outsourcing. Responsibilities include certain other components that are part of the supply chain, which involve customers of the organization, their customers, and the suppliers of their suppliers. The title of this position actually embodies the other portion of the definition, supply chain management. The new title is more progressive, has more authority and is strategically more important to the strength and financial future of the organization it supports.
When it comes to purchasing and supply management, there is much more involved in regards to the term of only purchasing.
