Transaction Processing System TPSs capture and process data that describes fundamental business transactions. This data is used to update databases and to produce a variety of reports for use by people both within and outside the enterprise. The business data goes through a transaction processing cycle that includes data collection, data editing, data correction, data manipulation, data storage, and document production. Data Collection The process of capturing and gathering all data necessary to complete transactions is called data collection. Data Editing An important step in processing transaction data is to perform data editing for validity and completeness to detect any problems with the data. Data Correction A data correction involves re-entering mis-keyed or mis-scanned data that was found during data editing. Data Manipulation The process of performing calculations and other data transformations related to business transaction. It include classifying data, sorting data into categories, performing calculations, summarizing results, and storing data in the organization’s database for further processing. Data Storage Data storage involves updating one or more databases with new transactions. Once the update process is complete, this data can be further processed and manipulated by other systems so that it is available for management decision making. Document Production and Reports Document production and reports involves generating output records and reports. These documents are hardcopy paper reports or displayed on computer screens (softcopy). Other examples are reservation systems which can be found at travel agencies, airline companies, rental companies, entertainment agencies or the relevant venues.
