I think that monumental architecture can mean different things to different people. Monumental architecture allows people to connect and remember the past. These monumental structures can show what each culture holds near and dear in their own culture. Monumental Architecture can also be simple and way to remember a loss to the nation or grand and a way to celebrate a nation or cultures wealth.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans memorial was founded by Jay Scruggs who served in Vietnam. Scruggs had to fight a hard battle in order to get the memorial approved to be built because of the country’s controversy with the Vietnam memorial. The memorial was wanted to recognize the service of all who served in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veteran memorial is also referred to as The Wall. This memorial is located in Washington D.C. There was much controversy in the construction and the design of the memorial. A competition was started to choose a winning design for the memorial. Maya Ying Lin was the winner of the memorial and her design was very simple. The design was a black granite wall which was policed and would have a reflective surface. The walls are also sunken into the ground so that you would have a peaceful and protected place to view and honor those who served. The controversy with this was not only the design but also the actual idea of a memorial for the Vietnam War. Many people did not like that it was going to built because the nation was split about the war and many did not like the war or the veteran who fought in it. There were also many people who saw the design as a scar in the earth since it did not have the typical upright monument and flags and different statues. There were also ideas that the walls were black because it was dark and disliked time.
