Untitled Wes Moore Essay
The Other Wes Moore is a novel that tells the story of two young boys both named Wes Moore, who grew up in the same city at the same time. Growing up, they survived in neighborhoods that are filled with gangs and drugs which led them into bad circumstances such as problems with law enforcement. Their paths ended up in opposite directions which can be accountable by their decisions as well as their mother`s involvement in their situations, and their father’s level of accomplishments. Although, Wes and the other Wes Moore have a lot of similarities, they both have many differences.
Author Wes has a caring and educated mother, she attends the University of Washington D.C and graduates from there. She is Wes’s biggest role model, and took care of him. Even though she struggled taking on the role of his mother and also his father; Author Wes says, She was my everything, the person I loved and respected the most in my world” (88). After surrounding himself with bad influences, and falling grades in school, she sends him to a private school to get a good education. In Contrast, the other Wes Moore had a detached mother. His mother works every single day and keeps a blind eye about his drug-dealing situation. Even though his mother went to University of Hopkins and wanted to continue her education, she did not get the opportunity to after her grant was terminated.
Author Wes Moore has an educated father. He graduated from Bard College, and has a successful job as radio news broadcaster. Unfortunately, while Wes was young his father passed abruptly from acute epiglottitis, leaving him fatherless. Other Wes’s father, “had been a ghost since his birth” (18), until he later meets his father to find that he is an alcoholic, as well as a drug dealer.
