Throughout the story Jonathan is faced with difficult choices and bases his decisions on evaluating the surroundings and his perception of the people he is dealing with. Jonathan, a decent and religious man, becomes at times dishonest, the devastation of war and disaster can turn even an intelligent, religious man to become a bit dishonest or take advantage of someone if placed in a situation to survive, Jonathan’s actions at times, in a way is similar to the thieves.
