INTRODUCTION:

I. How many of you had heard of a country named Pakistan prior to the September 11 tragedy? (wait for answer) Perhaps the most important reason why more Americans nowadays know more about Pakistan is because of its contribution in the fight against terrorism.
II. Being born and raised in Pakistan, I was raised as Muslim and was introduced to certain cultural beliefs and values.
III. Because of cultural and religious differences I have experienced and witnessed a lifestyle that is different than the American lifestyle in family togetherness, respect for certain individuals, and religion.

BODY:

I. Family “togetherness” is considered one of the important aspects of Pakistani culture.
A. Children even after they are married, live in the same household with their parents.
1. Seeing parents living with their children and grandchildren under the same roof is a commonplace in Pakistan.
2. Living together as one big family helps promote unity and work out any differences.
II. Certain individuals are given utmost respect in Pakistani culture.
A. Parents are treated with much respect and their decisions are highly regarded.
1. For example, parents have high “say so” when it comes to choosing a life partner for their children.
B. Teachers are also highly respected in Pakistani culture.
1. Generally teachers have as much authority in discipling a student as child’s own parents.
III. Islam is the primary religion practiced in Pakistan and as Muslim I have some religious obligations.
A. My religion requires me to pray five times a day.
B. Once a year, I must spend 2.5% of my savings to help the needy.
C. Once in a lifetime, I must perform a pilgrimage to Mecca.
