Three years of consecutive foreign language should not be required at west shore jr sr high school. Taking an extra 3 years of classes can be time wasting in high school. Students can take an extra math class or science class, they also need a bit more active time, and it adds un needed stress onto students. The way students are being taught foreign language is not ideal for learning the language and becoming fluent in it. The foreign language classes should be focused more on figuring out language and breaking down sentences instead of vocabulary. And memorizing formulas where you just plug in words to make a sentence.
A foreign language in unnecessary because when people need to learn a language they normally travel to that country to learn it and dissect sentences that they say and most of the time just memorizing and reciting words doesn’t teach people how to make a sentence and have a long lasting conversation with them and if someone is asking someone else and question in another country they may not answer in vocabulary you know. Also there are many different dialects of languages. For example Cuban Spanish is different than Mexican Spanish and teaching children vocab out of a book doesn’t really teach them anything on how to talk to people in a different country.
Kids in middle school, and high school don’t have that long of a memory span, if someone is taught Spanish in even the 5th grade and they don’t practice it for just even a couple months they won’t remember it and everything is out of the window. The only way someone will learn Spanish and maintain the information is if people want to learn the language and stick with it for a year and even when you move to a different country people become fluent in a language just from being around the language and having to learn it for themselves.
