Why Marcus Garvey is Ignorant
In my opinion, Marcus Garvey’s idea of a separate “black” nation was absolutely ridiculous. Garvey’s idea was far too unrealistic and was every thing but a solution to the problems Negroes faced in the United States during that time. I have this opinion for several reasons; three of those reasons being that it only would have made racism stronger, it could have led to many more wars between the races of “white” and “black” people, and it would’ve made Negroes feel like they were a completely different species.
First of all, racism was already a huge issue during that time period. During May of 1917, Marcus Garvey organized the first branch of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. Even though that was fifty-two years after the Civil War, racism was still at the peak of its’ conflict. Riots between races known as “race riots” began in 1917 (encyclopedia.com), which was the same exact year that Marcus Garvey organize the Universal Negro Improvement Association. I don’t’ think that was much of a coincidence. Integration is defined as “the act of combining one thing with another so that they become a whole (Google definitions).” Therefore, integration was the only possible solution to end racism in the United States. Instead of integration, Marcus Garvey spoke on the idea of segregation. Segregation is defined as “the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people or things or being set apart (Google definitions).” So basically, while Marcus Garvey was trying to help Negroes, he was only making their lives more difficult.
Second of all, there were already so many conflicts between whites and blacks during that time. Trying to completely migrate the entire “black” race to a separate country would have only made things so...
