Companies Synopsis
Caleb Braham of New Bern, North Carolina was a pharmacist. Mr. Braham’s most popular beverage called “Brad’s Drink” was created in 1893. The drink was renamed Pepsi Cola in 1898 after the pepsin and cola nuts used in the recipe. In 1898, Caleb Braham purchased the trade name “Pep Cola” from a competitor in New Jersey. The new name was trademarked in June 1903, a new Pepsi logo was designed, and shares of stock of the new company were issued (Bellis, n.d.).
Today PepsiCo Inc. is a global consumer goods company, chiefly engaged in production, marketing, and sales of a variety of food, snacks, and beverage products. The company operates in North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. It is headquartered in New York and employs approximately 274,000 people (PepsiCo, 2014).
The company has a strong market position in the market it operates in as well as in the product categories it offers. Across its largest markets, Pepsi has the dominant position among top brands, with nine of the top forty packaged food and beverage trademarks in the United States. In addition, the company has nine of the top fifty packaged food and soft drinks brands in Russia, seven of the top fifty in Mexico and six of the top fifty in the United Kingdom (PepsiCo, 2014).
Pepsi holds the number one position in the salty snacks, hot cereals and sports drinks category. Pepsi is the second largest company globally in the carbonated soft drinks, juice and juice drinks category. The company holds the leading position in its key strategic markets. Pepsi leads the market, in terms of food and beverage retail sales, in most countries (PepsiCo, 2014).
