 You Might Need Counseling if…

What are some characteristics of an individual that might cause them to engage in counseling is the question that was posed to me. Some characteristics of abusers can be that the abuser may have been abused themselves. This could have taken place while the abuser was a child or maybe even in their early preteen years. They might not have had anyone to speak to or anyone they felt as though they could trust. If our abuser was in-fact abused as a child or preteen it could have been by someone very close to them or their family, someone nobody would ever suspect. Which, later in their life could have resulted in them turning to drugs, violence, alcohol and other negative ways of expressing him or herself.
As the phrase go: “Hurt people, hurt people.” This is all that person may know. They could be very dependent on their victim but also using the dependency as a form of manipulation and power. They might not be able to or know how to express their feelings. As a child they probably were not allowed to speak up or have an opinion. This type of abuser would have a very dominating personality, not allowing their victim to befriend anyone in fear of losing that person if someone were to find out what the victim was going through. What might actually cause the person to go to counseling could be the fear or threat of their victim leaving them. They may have gotten into trouble with the law and was presented with the option to either go to jail or to seek professional help. They may have had something drastic happen to them where a suppressed memory was forced to come to light and they realize they need help. They may have committed a crime and realized that they have no way out, they are tired of playing the bad guy and they have nothing left to lose as they might be behind bars and now they feel they want to take on a life of religion.
